New research from Cloud2Me, found at the Digital Accountancy Show (DAS) and the Festival of Accounting & Bookkeeping (FAB), has revealed some surprising trends around IT setup and cloud migration – and who’s actually managing it all.
Key findings from the 2025 survey:
Hybrid IT is the norm
Over a third of firms now run a mix of cloud and legacy systems. Cloud adoption is growing, but it’s not quite all-in yet.
Office servers haven’t disappeared
More than 1 in 5 accountancy firms still have a physical server on site. That’s a big red flag when it comes to security and business continuity.
Only 7% have an Accountancy specialist Hosted Desktop
Despite the clear benefits of application knowledge and specialist support, firms are using generic suppliers.
Most firms rely on generalist IT support
58% of respondents said they work with a local provider and not one that understands the specific needs of accountancy firms.
One person running the whole IT show?
Nearly a third of firms rely on a single director or partner to manage IT. That’s a huge risk if something goes wrong.
What’s stopping the switch to cloud?
Myth: Cloud migration is too expensive
22% of firms said cost was the biggest barrier. But in reality, the long-term savings and security gains far outweigh any upfront investment.
Headspace matters
Some firms simply don’t have the capacity to think about change – even if they know they need it. 14% admitted they just don’t have the mental space.
‘Other’ reasons made up 27%
Which tells us one thing: there’s confusion, hesitation, and a lack of clear next steps for many.
